Most people think Texas doesn't get cold. Then a January cold snap drops Dallas to 18°F and suddenly nothing in your garage works. If your garage door won't open or move smoothly when it's cold outside, here's what's happening and how to fix it.
Why Cold Weather Breaks Garage Doors
Three things happen when temperatures drop:
- Lubricant thickens. The grease on your hinges, rollers, and tracks becomes sluggish in cold temperatures. The door binds and strains.
- Metal contracts. Springs and tracks shrink slightly. Tolerances tighten. What was a smooth fit becomes too tight.
- Weatherstripping freezes to concrete. If your bottom seal got wet from rain or snow and then froze, your door is literally glued to the floor.
What to Do RIGHT NOW
1. Don't keep hitting the button. If the opener is straining, you'll burn out the motor or break a spring. Stop after one or two failed attempts.
2. Try to manually disconnect and lift the door. Pull the red emergency release cord. If the door won't lift manually, something is frozen or broken -- call us.
3. Check the bottom seal. If it's stuck to the concrete, pour a cup of warm (not boiling) water along the seal. Let it sit for a minute, then try.
4. Force/limit settings may need adjustment. Cold doors need slightly more force to operate. Some openers automatically adjust, some don't.
Prevention for the Next Cold Snap
Texas gets one or two big cold snaps each winter. Prepare:
- Lubricate before winter with white lithium grease -- not WD-40, which thickens in cold
- Check your weatherstripping -- replace if cracked or torn ($50-100 part)
- Make sure your door is balanced -- an unbalanced door fights you year-round but especially in cold
- Consider an insulated door if you're replacing -- the garage stays warmer and the door operates better
What NOT to Do
- Don't use boiling water -- concrete cracks, weatherstripping melts
- Don't pour gasoline or any flammable solvent
- Don't pry the door up with anything -- you'll bend the bottom panel
- Don't keep slamming the open button
