I got a call last month from a woman in Mesquite. Nicest lady you'll ever talk to. She told me another company had come out, looked at her garage door, and quoted her $1,900.
Nineteen hundred dollars.
She said they told her the door was bent from the springs breaking and that they'd need to "knock it back into shape" or possibly replace panels. She wasn't sure exactly what they said needed to happen -- she just knew the number sounded high and wanted a second opinion.
So I drove out there.
What I Actually Found
Here's what was going on with her door:
- Both torsion springs were snapped (this is what caused the door to stop working)
- The door had come off track on one side because of the spring failure
- The top bracket was cracked -- needed replacing
- One roller was shot
- The cables were fraying and the drums were worn
You know what wasn't wrong? The door wasn't bent. Not even close. I checked every panel, ran my hand along the sections, looked at the hinges. Perfectly straight. The door came off track because the springs broke -- that's what happens. You put the door back on track, replace the springs, and it works fine.
There was zero reason to "knock anything back into shape." That was made up to justify a $1,900 bill.
What I Did and What It Cost
Here's the actual repair:
- Put the door back on track
- Replaced both torsion springs
- Replaced the cracked top bracket
- Replaced the bad roller
- Replaced both cables and drums (they were worn enough that I recommended it -- she agreed)
- Balanced the door, lubricated everything, tested it
Total: $500.
That's springs, cables, drums, bracket, roller, labor, everything. Done in about an hour and a half.
She saved $1,400. Her door works perfectly.
Why This Happens
I see this more than I'd like to admit. Here's how the scam works:
- Company shows up, often with a very low "service call" fee ($19-$49) to get in the door
- They look at the door and start pointing at things -- "see this? that's bent. And this cable? dangerous. And your tracks? those need replacing too"
- They stack up a list of repairs that sounds scary and expensive
- They quote $1,500-$2,500 for work that should cost $300-$600
- The homeowner doesn't know any better, especially if they're older or not mechanically inclined
- They pay because the door is broken and they need it fixed today
It makes me angry. This woman was being taken advantage of because she didn't know what garage door springs cost. Nobody should have to be an expert on garage doors to not get ripped off.
How to Protect Yourself
If you get a quote that feels high:
- Ask them to show you what's "bent" or "damaged." If they can't point to it clearly, it's probably not there.
- Get a second opinion. Any honest company will come look for free and tell you what they see.
- Know the ballpark numbers. Springs: $289-$389. Cables: $289-$489. Opener: $650-$800. If you're being quoted double or triple that, something's off.
- Never let them start work without a written estimate. If they start taking things apart before giving you a number, tell them to stop.
Call Me for a Second Opinion
If you're in Mesquite, Garland, or anywhere in the DFW area and you've gotten a quote that doesn't sit right -- call me. 469-238-1831. I'll come look for free, tell you exactly what's wrong, and give you an honest price. No games.
Worst case, you find out the first company was right and you go with them. Best case, you save $1,400 like this lady did.
